Ideally, the strings should be actually resting on the neck of the guitar, almost negating the need to put much pressure on the strings in order to play a particular cord.

Better quality and more expensive models have the strings almost touching the neck already, thereby significantly reducing the pressure needed in order to play the chords and get a quality tone. In the cheaper models, even if you manage to press the strings correctly, the bend in the strings from their natural position to the neck can alter what the music is meant to sound like. This alone can cause frustration in newbies.

If someone has a real burning desire to learn this instrument, it’s important to invest in the best he can afford. If money is truly an issue, try to find a used instrument. Music stores and specialty guitar stores always have pre-owned instruments in perfect condition; these are perfect for new students without much money but who realize that quality will be instrumental (no pun intended) in their success.

Even high end rock guitars have different purposes; some are made for a lead and others are made for playing chords. Still the bass has only four strings and many people believe these are the easiest of all guitars to learn and play.
