Most guitarists, even famous ones, learn to play guitar without being able to read music. It’s a necessity to learn the simple principles of guitar, such as chord structure and simple scales, such as the pentatonic (referred to as the blues scale) but it is possible to attain a good standard of guitar playing without going through the process of learning to read music.

Many people believe that by removing the constraints of sight reading music allows a guitarist to flourish more becoming more original in their playing and performance. Would the world have had the influential talents of Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page had they gone to college to study guitar? It’s doubtful I think because what music teacher would have allowed Jimi Hendrix to turn his guitar upside down and string it in that fashion!

So, one way to learn to play guitar without the need to read music is to pick a simple song that you like and learn the chord structure. This can be done in a variety of ways such as listening to the song and trying to pick out chord sounds by ear, trying to find video footage of either the original artist or someone covering the song and picking up the chords from them by watching. Alternatively you could search for the guitar tab.

These are all good ways to learn to play guitar without reading music but try not to spend hours trawling through websites that just lead nowhere. If you find something that may cost a few dollars but is good value then I’d say invest a little money.

If you’re feeling creative and ambitious then you could have a go at writing your own songs. You’d be surprised at how rewarding this can be, plus it’s not that difficult either as many of the best songs ever written had used just 3 or 4 simple chords. If you can write songs early on, without being influenced then some fresh and original material can be created.
